Description: The whole of the parish of Stambourne including Stambourne Green, Robin Hood End, Finchingfield Road,  Greenfields, Smiths Farm, Dyers End, New Barn, Pitiful Wood, Wesley End, Stambourne Hall, New House The Parsonage, Meeting End Way and Church Road”

A few facts from the return:

  • 128 occupied dwellings
  • 582 people of which 396 were born in Stambourne
  • Only ~35 people were born further than about10 miles from Stambourne
  • 118 men and boys described as agricultural labourers
  • 134 women and girls described as straw plaiters 
  • 97 children were described as scholars
  • Of the 582 people in the census, 106 had the surname “Martin”.

If you have any details on which houses are which, please let us know. Very few of the houses in those days had names but they are shown where they have been entered on the census.
